5 things I wish people would stop asking me

1. Where do you work?
I hate when people ask me where I work. Mainly because I do not work anywhere, but also because I hate the notion of being defined by my employer. Just for the record, I hated this question just as much when I was working.
2. What part of India are you from?
I'm Ethiopian!
I also hate when there is a follow up question regarding what region of India Ethiopia is in. Geography anyone? I do, however, love when people ask me what part of Ethiopia I am from. It fills me with the great joy of knowing that there are worldly people out there.

3. Can I touch your hair?
Seriously. It's 2009. Why are people still asking me this? The answer is and always will be no. I think freckles are fascinating, but I certainly do not go up to folks and ask if I can touch their skin! Let the silliness stop.
4. Don't I know you from somewhere?
I must have endless doppelgangers in this city, because at least once a week, I am mistaken for someone else. I've been kissed, hugged and twirled around in the air by strangers. It's uncomfortable to say the least.
5. Where did you get that?
For a society that worships individuality, people sure do work hard to emulate one another. I mean, I do not believe in the farce that we are all special and unique, but at the very least, I'd like to walk around and not see everyone in the same thing. It is for this reason that I almost always lie and say I got the item in question from a thrift store in Turkey.
