Once, there was no division amongst the current day continents. Eventually however, a rift was formed and it was only inevitable, albeit painfully gradual, that two separate bodies would emerge. How long could a small rift have lasted? Time allows erosion to occur, plate tectonics to collide, even volcanoes and earthquakes play a role. Too much can occur once a rift exists. The damage can never be undone and as the laws of entropy make all to clear, chaos begets chaos which begets chaos, and it is an ever growing force. A small rift can turn into the world's largest ocean. It can create two separate realms in which different, cultures, languages, appearances and beliefs can emerge. It ends all unity and wars will be fought. We will destroy one another and assume a winner can exist.
I read recently that the Atlantic is slowly getting larger. That the oceanic crust is slowly subducting under the continental crust and that the full circle of our world will one day make itself evident when the separated continents will again become one. I wonder wonder what that will look like. Am I awaiting that day?
