I have always had a problem with the politics of moralism, which I suppose is why Dr. Martin Luther King Jr never really appealed to me. When I think of the Civil Rights Movement, I always imagine I would have been reciting Malcolm X's Message to the Grassroots or The Black Panther Party's 10 Point Plan before I ever considered Dr. King's I Have a Dream Speech. Dreaming is, after all, indicative of sleep right? Anyway, apparently MLK was awake sometimes, because this weekend, at the Schomburg Center there was a screening of some rare footage of Dr. King on a talk show discussing his opposition to the Vietnam war and I really found it to be full of portent, and pretty relevant.
I couldn't find the footage, but here is a speech he gave explaining his view on the war:
